Tecno DroiPad 8II, also known as DroiPad 8D, is an 8-inch tablet we unboxed a couple of weeks ago. The tablet is an upgrade to the DroiPad 8H in terms of physical build and technical specifications. Tecno DroiPad 8II isn’t just a tablet, it can also act as a mobile phone if you find it convenient holding an 8-inch device against your ear. Unlike Tecno DroiPad 8H though, it fully supports 4G LTE and of course, it has slots for two micro-SIMs.
Like we mentioned while unboxing the device, Tecno Mobile did put a lot of work into designing this beautiful piece. It has an all metal back that feels good to touch. No, this isn’t another cheap-looking Android device with plastic back cover, Tecno DroiPad 8D has that premium feel that isn’t too hard to notice.
Here’s a summary of the technical specifications:
For the rest of the tech specs, please refer to this page.
The 8-inch display packs a resolution of 1280 x 800 and the display is quite clear. The choice of screen size is a good balance between tiny 7-inch tablets and bigger 10-inch devices. Here is what it looks like compared with the 7-inch Lenovo A3300-HV and the 9.7-inch iPad Air.
The device runs Android 5.1 Lollipop behind a customized user interface. Surprisingly, it’s not Tecno’s HiOS which I definitely would’ve preferred.
The device comes with 1GB RAM and it’s powered by a 1.0GHz quad-core processor. It’s not the fastest thing out there but we should be reminded that this isn’t a high-end device. The Antutu benchmark score isn’t going to blow you away but in day-to-day use, it still does what it’s meant to do.
It comes with a 5MP rear camera and a 2.0MP front camera, both equipped with LED flash. A tablet isn’t meant for taking great images and it would be unfair to judge this device with its camera capabilities. However, it still produces decent images and there are different camera modes to get you started.
As mentioned previously, the device supports 4G LTE and you can make voice calls. There’s no earpiece included in the pack and you may need to get one yourself if need be. One thing I noticed about the device is that the FM radio works quite well without the need to use an earpiece as the antenna.
Tecno DroiPad 8D has a 5,000mAh battery which makes the device last long when in use. The high capacity battery can be used to charge other phones using the included USB-OTG cable.
With its dual speakers placed at the bottom, sounds come out loud and clear. It has Tecno’s proprietary music app, Boom Player, pre-installed.
Tecno DroiPad 8D has its shortcomings and honestly, this would’ve been a perfect gadget if only it came with 2GB RAM. A bit of additions here and there in the hardware would’ve complimented the beautifully crafted metallic build which I absolutely fell in love with. The recommended retail price was pegged at ₦42,000 but this might have changed already.
