Tecno Boom J7 Review: The Android Music Phone You Would Like

Tecno Boom J7 Review: The Android Music Phone You Would Like

Multimedia Apps & The New Boom Player

Tecno Boom J7 is a multimedia phone made specifically for music lovers. There’s a Boom Player that comes with the device, a music application that lets you stream music freely. This app features both local and foreign songs though the database isn’t yet as large as it should be. This app also displays synchronized song lyrics and you can search for music videos as well.

However, the Boom Player still needs a lot of work if Tecno really want users to get addicted to it. The music database still needs a lot of additions. I wasn’t unable to find many of my favorite songs.

Still, it’s the right step in the right direction. Did I mention the audio output on the speaker too is excellent?

The Gallery app too has a new design. Apart from the regular album sorting, you can sort photos based on locations, time taken and more.

Memory

The device comes with 16GB ROM but the operating system also shares this disk, leaving about 10GB left for the user. Of course, you can expand the momory via the SD card slot to  maximum of 32GB.

The 1GB RAM too also lets you multitask efficiently.

Network & Connectivity

As expected, Tecno Boom J7 is a 3G enabled GSM phone supporting all GSM networks in Nigeria. You can connect over WiFi and use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

There’s also a new proximity technology similar to NFC called HotKnot. This allows two devices to communicate by touching their screens against eachother. It’s a technology developed my MediaTek and we’re seeing in it on newer devices in the market.

Camera

Don’t be fooled by the 8MP camera, there’s more to a camera than bogus pixel resolution. Tecno Boom J7 rear camera takes excellent pictures with pretty great clarity. Here’s a sample picture taken with the device:

And one taken in a completetely dark room with the LED tlash turned on:

The front camera works works well under bright lighting conditions but the performance indoors isn’t too impressive. If you’re gonna take selfies, you should ensure there’s proper lighting.

Performance

Tecno Boom J7 has a MediaTek – MT6582 chipset, a 1.3GHz Quad Core processor with Mali-400MP2 graphic processing unit. The device is quite repsonsive, fast and will definitely run most of your favorite apps and HD games.

Battery

Tecno Boom J7 has an optimized operating system that puts less drain on the battery and despite the capacity being only 2020 mAh, proper optimization on the user’s part can let you maximize it fully and get the best out of it. You can paly music for hours with little or no reasonable drain.

However, I’m yet to start using battery draining apps like Facebook app and the rest of them.

Price & Availability

The price is subject to change but you can get it on Konga for #28,000 – #31,000 at the moment, depending on the seller.  Buy Now

Conclusion

To be honest, I wasn’t very impressed with this device’s technical specifications at first but having spent some time with it, I can say it is a device worth recommending. It is a great music phone and it really proves that.

Most smartphone always judge a book by its cover in the mobile market and huge technical specifications seems to be everything. We only hope the next phone (if the Boom series continues) has at least a 2GB RAM, a battery with higher capacity and a much faster processor even if it means stepping up the price a little bit more.
