Fix: Windows 8 Starting Up With Notepad

Fix: Windows 8 Starting Up With Notepad

Wale Adekile
January 20, 2014

My PC has been showing this thing for almost 3 months and I’ve always ignored it until I decided to do something about it a few hours ago.

[.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%system32shell32.dll,-21787

I had no idea what caused this error or what the stuff in the note means, I just wanted to get rid of it and I eventually did. I ran a search on Google and landed on Microsoft’s support website but the solution given there only applies to Windows XP, not Windows 8. Although what I read there didn’t really work as it’s not applicable to Windows 8 so to speak, it did give me an idea of where to look and how to fix this issue.

Why You See this Error

To solve a problem, you first need to understand it. This issue normally occurs when there’s a desktop.ini file in your Startup folder. Unlike earlier versions of Windows, it’s not that easy to find the startup folder in Windows 8.

How to Fix

Fixing this problem is easy. It’s only a couple of steps and you’re done:

1. On your desktop, move your mouse to the bottom-left corner and right-click. Select Run.

windows 8 run

2. Type %AppData% and click OK.

3. The Roaming folder should now appear. from here, navigate to C:UsersDon CaprioAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup

4. You should now see a desktop.ini file. Simply delete it and close this folder.

5. Save your work (if there’s any) and restart your PC.

On booting up, that notepad with all those “jargons” written on it shouldn’t appear anymore. Hope it works for you.
