By “love,” we mean GTA, and by “at last,” we mean not quite yet, but nearly! GTA 6 has been on the horizon for so long that some franchise fans have begun to doubt its existence altogether. Thankfully for us, Rockstar games have confirmed, out loud, that GTA 6’s development is well underway. They were sly enough not to give us an exact ETA for the game, but they have dropped a few nuggets of information to satiate the ravenous fans.
The last real hint that we received from Rockstar themselves was that there would be “large-scale destruction” in the game, which would make an exciting change from the last few versions. GTA is one of the top video games ever to have been released by Rockstar Games, and it’s undoubtedly what they’re best known for, but information is still scarce. Rumors about the game, however, have abounded. Though it’s a little challenging to tell fact from fiction at this point, we thought we’d share the most reliable information that we have with you to help stave off a complete emotional meltdown just a little bit longer.
What Can We Expect From GTA 6?
Though Rockstar has not committed at all to any form of a solid release date, we’ve done the math. Rockstar announced GTA 6 only one day after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, which was October 26th, 2018. Working from that information on that date and taking into account the usual console development delays and when Rockstar usually announces a new game versus when it’s released, we’ve got…nothing. Our estimation based on the dates would have been August 2020, but that date has long since come and gone with no hint of further action. The latest from the rumor mill is that the release will be sometime in 2025, set in a modern version of Vice City. This contradicts earlier rumors that the launch might be in October next year and have the game set in Miami. At this point, all fans can do is wait, hope, and maybe even throw in a prayer or two.
Where Will The Game Be Set
Currently, there’s no official information on the game world’s location, but we do have a few more rumors to share on that score. Many rumors point to Vice City as being the new game’s location, and one even mentions that the game might be set across the US; this rumor would account for the lengthy development time, and we can’t say we’d be mad if it were true! While many rumor millers have postulated that the game might be set in the 70s-80s, Tom Henderson, a well-known GTA 6 tipster, has tweeted that the game will definitely be set in the modern-day. In 2020, we saw one of the biggest “leaked” pieces of info yet to be associated with GTA 6. User JackOLantern1982 dropped a whopping 23 breadcrumbs about the game. He confirmed its development stage, mentioned that its codename was Brazil Project Americas (since the game would be taking place in several countries) and that the game would have a lot of Netflix’s Narcos influence. JackOLantern 1982 went on to say that in the new game, you’d be building your own drug empire. Your vehicle will allow for trunk storage (to hide all the drugs, of course). This leak mentioned the idea that the game would be set in the 70s/80s, and now we really don’t know who to believe.
More Unconfirmed Leaks
Another tipster has come out saying that the game will be modern-day but set in Liberty City. This tipster went on to say that the game would play out with a feeling something like the show The Wire, another nod to the drug ring idea, which makes that a pretty consistent theme. Back in 2016, Dan Houser, one of Rockstar’s founders, mentioned in an interview that simply because GTA has felt contemporary and American-ish so far, that’s not necessarily what they’ll stick with all the way through. Is Dan finally making good on his word? This interview was probably the basis for a lot of speculation that the next GTA would take place entirely outside of the US. In that same year, Rockstar developers and writers had taken a trip to an unnamed Japanese capital to gather references for the next GTA; however, that idea seems to have fallen by the wayside.
If history were to repeat itself and the new GTA were to be set in one of the existing game locations, these are the candidates that we believe are most likely:
- Liberty City
- Vice City
- San Andreas
A 2013 interview with Leslie Benzies of Rockstar led us to believe that the world would be expanding, not regressing. Leslie said that Rockstar was looking to grow the GTA world until it was THE WORLD…we hope this holds true.
Wrap Up
Whatever the truth about GTA 6 is, it’s clear that we’re still going to have to wait a while to find out. We hope it’s worth the wait when it arrives!
