With mobile gadgets such as MP4 players, phones e.t.c being able to stream online videos, play digital video files and even access your wireless network to play your digital videos collection, DVD’s are surely fading out. So, if you would rather keep a copy of your DVD videos somewhere safe, you are definitely going to need a good DVD ripper to transfer the video files to your computer. A DVD ripper is important if you want to play your movies on your gadgets too as you would need it to rip the movies off.

It is a free, open source, multi-plaform software for converting and ripping videos. It has loads of good reviews from satisfied users and personally, I think its worth it. It offers a wide range of easy to use options for ripping and converting your movies. Unlike most other ripping software, Handbrake rips subtitles from videos too.It works on Mac, Linux and Windows.
Windows 7 and Vista users may need to run it as Administrator to avoid minor problems.
Auto Gordian Knot (Windows)
This is another great DVD ripper with converting feature. This means it not only rips your videos but also converts them at your bidding. It supports many, if not all, of the popular video formats and some minor and forgotten formats like DVB streams. You can also compress your converted videos with it. The software allows you to even choose batch projects of multiple files and set them all to convert. Its kinda easy to use and advisable for beginners.
Format Factory (Windows)
This is another awesome software that does more than ripping your videos, it also gives you the option of converting to any format you prefer to have your video including mobile formats. This software can also rip CD, repair damaged audio and video files and compress them beautifully to still give you that HD touch. It comes in 56 languages and more are being added after every update. It allows you backup your dvd collection without taking more space than needed.
Acala DVD 3GP Ripper (Windows)
If all you want to do is convert movies for your mobile phone, then this software was probably made with you in mind. Unlike their professional version this software does only one thing: Convert videos for mobile phones. Its fast and easy to use, I bet the guys from frendz4m use this software a lot. The output file is small with lossless compression.
Acala DVD Ripper Professional (Windows)
If you are a total noob when it comes to DVD ripping, you might want to consider using this software. It does all the work for you the easy way. With the ability to rip your DVDs to the most popular formats with easy to follow menu options., it can rip videos to play on iPads, iPods, iPhones, Android and Symbian Smartphones. It used to be my favorite till I found out about Handbrake.
