Fix: Google Apps Email not Working with MX Records Correctly Set

Fix: Google Apps Email not Working with MX Records Correctly Set

Wale Adekile
May 31, 2012

I realized I wasn’t getting any email and thought maybe the mails weren’t just coming in. I was sure my MX records were correctly set but when it was getting longer than expected, I sent a mail to my Google Apps email from another Yahoo! Mail and go this error:

Technical details of temporary failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 451 451 Temporary local problem – please try later (state 13).

I also sent the mail from another Gmail account and saw that same error. You know what it means when your business email goes down. I started looking for a solution to the problem and considered contacting Hostgator. I was pretty sure I did nothing wrong and the problem had to be from them. I almost did but then I ran a MX lookup and saw something strange. There was an MX record pointing to my very own domain with Priority 0!

google apps email not workingI then logged in to cPanel to see that MX record sitting right on top of the list:

My email was working fine before and I’m sure I didn’t add that record. I wondered how it got there but I haven’t contacted Hostgator to ask how it happened. I only deleted that record and everything went back to normal but three good days with no email isn’t fun.

If you’re having problems with Google Apps email with your MX records set right, you should check if there’s any other record pointing to your domain. It’s going to disrupt other records unless you delete it like I did. New to Google Apps, I suggest you read this post on how to get started with your own Google Apps custom email.
