iPod Touch 6th Generation was released last year but I never gave it much thought. I’ve never needed it and I’m not even sure I do right now. After much deliberation, I bought it as a gift for my wife whose love for music is unquenchable. The last one she had was an iPod Nano a couple of years ago and I couldn’t convince her to get an iPhone. Explaining that I haven’t met any device as good as iOS devices when it comes to music management wasn’t convincing enough.
I ordered for an iPod Touch 6G which I didn’t regret. It was the perfect gift and having used it frequently too over these last few weeks, there are certain things I’ve learned.
It might make no sense if you already have an iPhone
If you already have an iPhone, getting an iPod Touch may not really make sense. To make it simpler to understand, the iPod Touch 6G is like an iPhone stripped of all capabilities to act as a phone. It can run almost every app you can run on the iPhone (except for a few like WhatsApp).
Having an iPhone and an iPod Touch is like having the same devices doing the same thing.
There’s still a small niche market for tiny 4-inch devices
The truth is that there’s still a small niche market for 4-inch devices. Apple iPod Touch 6th Generation comes with a 4-inch display and a very slim body. It’s so light it weighs only 88 grams and the thickness is only 6.1mm. Although I’ve been using 5.5″ devices lately, a part of me really likes how small it is and how light it feels.
Apple may not be completely wrong giving us the 4-inch iPhone SE in 2016. The last 4-inch device I held was the iPhone 5s but this is absolutely something else. Although I may never go back to tiny devices, I know a few people who still prefer smaller screens because these are the only devices people with small hands can operate comfortably with one hand.
This may be the perfect “side-device”
If you have an Android phone you find yourself always touching, getting an iPod Touch might give your phone some rest. You can make it your multimedia gadget while your phone is strictly for business — “division of labour” isn’t really a bad thing, right?
The 8MP iSight camera doesn’t beat what’s on the iPhone 6S but the clarity isn’t bad. As a matter of fact, the camera is quite good and it comes equipped with LED flash. A camera comparision with the prided dual-camera setup on my Huawei Honor 6 Plus puts it to shame.
If you love music, let iOS 9 + iTunes do the management for you. Personally, I’ve never brought myself to make any Android phone my main music gadget. It’s the reason I always have an iOS device every point in time even when my daily driver turns out to be an Android phone.
You can still have a feel of iOS without breaking the bank
Not everyone can afford an iPhone and that’s a fact. However, you can still have a feel of iOS without spending too much.
You can still get an iPod Touch 6G for as low as $199 if you can deal with having just 16GB storage. The 32GB variant sells for $249 and if you have enough cash, you can buy the 128GB variant for $399. However, the price isn’t so “friendly” in Nigeria due to our current exchange rate.
iPod Touch 6G runs the latest version of iOS and most games and apps working on the iPhone should work on it. It is powered by the same A8 processor on the iPhone 6 / 6 Plus.
