If Asus Zenfone 2 is rather too expensive for you, the brand probably had you in mind when it decided to release the new Asus Pegasus 2 Plus also known as Asus X550. This is another quality product from the brand most of us have trusted for quite a long time.
While the device is actually an upgrade to Asus Pegasus (X002) released around may this year, the specifications makes if feel like the smaller version of Zenfone 2. We’re not denying the fact that they’re two different product lines though.
Display
Asus Pegasus 2 Plus has a 5.5″ screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. That’s a HD resolution with a pixel density of 401 ppi. The display is crystal clear and the colors come popping right out of the screen. The display is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3.
Body design
Considering this is a mid-range device, the phone looks well designed. It’s got a gold-colored metal frame that gives it a premium look The edges look heavily curved.
The phone has on-screen soft-keys and you won’t find any key at the front. The power buttons are placed to the right. It’s only 8.3 mm thick and it only weighs 156 g, it’s rather light for a 5.5″ device.
The device has a removable backcover but the battery isn’t removable. The removed backcover shows the dual micro-SIM cards and SD card slots.
Performance
While the phone doesn’t match Zenfone 2 in performance, it definitely beats its immediate predecessor as it sports a 1.5GHz octa-core processor. There’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 64-bit chip doing all the dirty work and as expected, this device is pretty fast. It comes with a 3GB random access memory which is a whole lot to work with, there’s a Adreno-405 chip GPU handling graphics.
Operating System
Asus X550 runs Android 5.1 Lollipop though I was expecting the phone to ship with Marshmallow. Anyway, I do believe it should be upgradeable to the latest Android version anytime soon.
As expected the phone has a cool, customized UI called Zen UI found one Asus devices.
Storage
There are two versions of the device and the key difference is the storage size. There’s an Advanced Edition (3GB RAM 32GB ROM) and there’s also a Standard Edition (3GB RAM 16GB ROM). Both versions share exactly the same specifications except for the ROM.
Both versions have SD card slots support up to 32GB memory card.
Battery
The device has a Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 3030mAh. That’s a whole lot to play with and with regular use, it should last one through the whole day and partially through the next.
Camera
With an f/2.0 aperture, you can expect great low-light captures with the 13MP rear camera. It’s got a 5MP front camera for taking selfies.
