Right now, Infinix Zero appears to be the best and most affordable mid-range smartphone in Nigeria given the great technical specifications, premium build and the surprisingly low price. The device was unveiled last month and so far, it has received a very warm welcome.
Variants
It’s important to first let you know that there are two different variants of this device though the technical specifications are almost the same except for the random access memory and internal storage. There’s a 1GB RAM, 8GB ROM model and there’s another 2GB RAM, 16GB ROM model.
Physical Appearance
This device isn’t just like any other Android device with “cheap plastic” body, it’s covered all through with Gorilla Glass 3, giving it that premium look anyone would fall in love with. The device is slim and the metallic frame makes it more alluring. The physical appearance is chiseled almost to perfection and the edges are slightly curved.
The back is made of brushed metal with a glass finish. The whole device (both front and back) is covered with Corning Gorilla glass and as expected, it’s scratch resistant. Infinix Zero has no physical button below the screen but there are three softkeys for Home, Menu & Back.
The memory card slot is a tray on the right side of the phone just above the power button and volume controls. Some users said this is rather confusing and but it’s not really a problem, it only needs getting used to. The SIM tray (dual) is on the left.
Display
Infinix Zero features a 5-inch HD Capacitive Touch IPS Screen protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 that’s known to be toughened and very scratch-resistant. It has a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels with a pixel density of 294 ppi.
The soft keys appear as dots below the screen and this may be confusing since the back key and menu key position differs on devices at times but then, it might take getting used to if the arrangement is alternated on your previous device.
Camera
This device comes with a 13MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera. The pictures taken with the back camera are fairly good but when compared with another device with just 8MP, it doesn’t look so great. The camera is equipped with a LED flash and other features include HDR, Motion Tracking, Geo-tagging and Auto Focus.
The front camera can be described as optimized for video calls at best.
Operating System & Processor Speed
Infinix Zero comes with Google’s latest available operating sysyem, Android 4.4.2 Kitkat. The 1.4GHz octa-core processor (MediaTek MT6592) makes it a worthy competition to Tecno Phantom Z. It runs applications quite smoothly and I was able to play some HD games quite well without problems.
Memory (RAM & ROM)
I laid my hand on the bigger RAM variant. 16GB is a lot of space and it all gets better when you can expand it to 32GB with an SD card. The 2GB RAM makes multi-tasking easier.
As explained earlier, there’s another 1GB RAM, 8GB ROM version but the price different isn’t even that much.
Connectivity
The device has a slot for dual SIM both for GSM networks. It supports these network frequencies:
- 2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
- 3G Network HSDPA 900 / 2100
The device doesn’t support 4G network but that isn’t a problem as no Nigerian mobile GSM network provides that. The device is WiFi-enabled as expected, supports WiFi hotsspot, WiFi direct and Bluetooth.
Battery
Infinix Zero comes a non-removable Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 1920mAh. With heavy use, you may get about 7 to 8 hours of surfing the internet, gaming and other activities.
With just phone calls and data turned off though, it lasted way more than that.
Bonus
The device comes with a free 5ooMB data bundle from Etisalat and you’ll be receiving this for good 12 months.
Price in Nigeria & Where to Buy
At the moment, this device is exclusively available on Konga.
The 1GB RAM, 8GB ROM version presently costs 20,900 and the 2GB RAM, 16GB ROM variant is only ₦23,900. I was at Computer Village, Ikeja last week and surprisingly, this device was being sold for ₦26,800. Buying directly from Konga looks like the better alternative if you intend to save some bucks.

Dislikes
Well, merely looking at the spec, the battery capacity could’ve been better. The battery life isn’t that great. A processor with 8 cores, a 2GB RAM and a 5-inch screen deserves more than just a 1920mAh battery.
The camera too isn’t that impressive but that doesn’t imply that it’s that bad.
If the price is to be put into consideration, the few cons of the phone should be ignored. The phone is relatively cheap considering all the features packed into it and the brilliant design.
